Key insight: Everything in SETUP > TONE (Comp/Gate) and SETUP > VocalEQ (Shape, EQ, De-Ess) processes your signal before it splits to lead and harmony. Problems at the top of the chain, like insufficient input gain or over-compression, cascade through everything downstream. Fix gain at the source first.

Gain Staging Order

Calibrate Your Mic

Press and hold the SETUP button to open the calibration screen. Use the 3rd knob to set your mic type (Dynamic, Condenser, MP-75, E835, MP-76). Selecting Condenser enables 48V phantom power. In Auto mode, be ready to sing immediately. The VL3X starts listening as soon as the screen opens.

Use MORE GAIN / LESS GAIN buttons to set your input level while singing. Gives you direct control over the gain value.

Guitar calibration: Rotate the dial under CALIBRATE to switch from MIC to GUITAR. Same screen, same two modes. In Auto mode, be ready to play immediately. It starts listening right away. Calibrating both inputs is recommended.

SETUP > TONE + VOCALEQ

Bypass All Processing

Turn off all processing so you can hear your raw input signal. This isolates the gain stage so you can set levels without interference from compression, EQ, or shaping.

SETUP > TONE:
  COMPRESS → 0
  GATE → OFF

SETUP > VOCALEQ:
  TONE → OFF (disables Shape, EQ, and De-Ess together)

SETUP > MIC CONTROL

Set MIC GAIN

If you used Auto calibration in Step 1, that value is your starting point. Now fine-tune: sing at your loudest performance volume and watch the input meter. Peaks should hit roughly 75% of the meter, not 75% of the max gain value. Factory default is 22 out of 66, which is conservative. Dynamic mics often need more.

Re-enable Compression

Turn compression back on, but start lower than the factory default of 50. Over-compression reduces perceived volume and eats headroom before feedback. Build up only as much as you need.

COMPRESS → 25–30 (start here, increase if needed)

SETUP > TONE

Set Gate

If Gate is on Manual with a high threshold, it will cut off quiet singing and make it feel like you lack volume. Start with Adaptive and let the VL3X handle it. Only switch to Manual after input gain is correct and you need tighter control.

GATE → ADAPTIVE (recommended starting point)

SETUP > VOCALEQ

Re-enable Shape, EQ & De-Ess

Turn TONE back on to re-enable the VocalEQ engine. Like compression, start with Shape and De-Ess lower than factory 50. EQ MODE selects between Adaptive (auto-adjusts to your voice) or Manual (fixed EQ curve). Start with Adaptive.

Check LEAD LEVEL

This is per-preset: one preset may feel quiet while another is fine. Lead Level is the last gain stage for your dry vocal. Check it on every preset you use live.

Section 04

Common Traps

Factory Defaults Are Heavy

Shape, Compress, and De-Ess all default to 50. That is a lot of processing before the signal reaches anything. You are fighting the VL3X's own processing for headroom.

Pull Compress, Shape, and De-Ess back to 25-30. Add processing only as needed.

Global Overrides

Global settings silently override per-preset mixer levels. A preset can look correct but sound quiet because a global flag is controlling the actual output level.

Check SETUP for global vocal effect flags. Disable globals you do not intend to use.

Aggressive Gate

A gate with too high a threshold cuts off quiet passages entirely. It masks the real problem: insufficient input gain. The gate makes it worse, not better.

Start with Gate off or Adaptive. Only use Manual after input gain is correct.

HardTune Follows Harmony Key

When HardTune KEY SOURCE is set to NATURALPLAY (the default), pitch correction reads its key and scale from the Harmony block. If the Harmony key is wrong, HardTune correction is also wrong.

Set Harmony key correctly first. Or switch KEY SOURCE to MANUAL to control HardTune independently.
